SANDLIB is the acronym for sons and daughters of Liberia; a non for profit NGO dedicated to the advocacy of social justice, human rights and equality for all Liberian;
An organization committed totally to the war against ignorance disease and poverty; and committed to curtailing corruption in Liberian society by promoting honesty as best policy in government and society as a whole.
The idea for SANDLIB springs from a pastoral entitled “Liberia at Crossroads; Hopes and Challenges”. Produced by the Catholic bishops of Liberia in January 2004, the message of the pastoral is clear, compelling, and all encompassing. After a brief discourse on the role of the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia (IRCL) in bringing the fragile peace we now enjoy, it makes mention of issues such as the all powerful presidency and the need to decentralize political powers; a judiciary made up of men and women well versed in the law; the economy; the health and education systems; equitable distribution of the wealth of Liberia; a war crimes tribunal, banning of warlords; the banning of arms, the relevance of the army; and the need for information Ministry to play a regulatory instead of a propaganda role for government; human rights; restructuring of the National Security Apparatus, etcetera. Sadly, the message of the pastoralists, was, for the most part, largely forgotten.
We decided to vote into office, people who had destroyed our country, wasted lives, and made bleak the future of our children, and bleaker still, the old age of our elders. Nevertheless, as a measure of support for National reconciliation, SANDLIB is looking forward to actively engage government in addressing some of the major concerns and problems in post war Liberia through advocacy and concrete actions – deeds. The conditions which spawned the war are still with us: rampant corruption, a poor criminal justice system, ignorance, deep poverty, and the culture of impunity.
